My Thoughts and Ramblings:
What a handy piece of equipment this turned out to be. I must admit it is a vast improvement over my
Palm Treo GPS loaded with the Tom Tom software. I did not have a lot of time to research my choice,
but after my Treo led me to Denver City Centre in the middle of night, I knew I needed an upgrade.
(This was the second time I had been led astray by that foolish machine - although in all fairness it
was near 3 am and I was somewhere between Moberly Lake and Ft. St. John) Somehow I felt safer there
though!
After a day or so of looking and a US Border guard recommending the Garmin brand, I settled upon the
765T. I would have loved to have gone with the 775T (comes with Euro Maps pre-loaded), but there were
none in the Greater Denver area. They were also listed about 150 bucks more than Canadian stores on
various US websites. But I got a fairly good deal from Best Buy. They priced matched another store and
I did not have to drive that far to get it!
When you are in a strange city and not used to driving in six lane traffic, the lane assist feature becomes
a blessing. It has a larger screen than my Treo, so that was another benefit and the when the street names
are called out to you, it makes it easier to focus on the hundreds or other cars trying to make sudden lane
changes.
My Mazda 3 came out the year before the MP3 version became a standard feature (It was available as an
$800 option though!), this makes the Garmin's SD Card slot and built in MP3 Player very handy. The 765T
also talks to your blue-tooth equipped phone. So you can be driving along listening to your favorite song,
and it will stop playing and tell you you have a phone call. You can choose to answer it using the built in
microphone or let the call go. Come January 1st here in BC, this will become very important.
Final Say:
All in all I am very happy with my purchase. Yes it would have been cheaper to buy it in Canada. Yes,
it is a little harder to add your address book to your way-points compared to the Treo. It nevertheless
has become a asset in my daily driving.
